"Muna-Madan" a love-tragedy penned by the late Nepalese poet, Laxmi Prasad Devkota resembles the Muslim "Laila-Majnu" and the English "Romeo-Juliet" in its sentiments and the story shows that he had a deep affection for the Shangri-La. As against the other two versions the arduous journey was the cause of the tragedy as opposed to communal strife. He also highly respected the Buddhist philosophy although he was an orthodox Hindu by birth and faith. For Devkota himself, "Muna-Madan" was his favorite write-up amongst his numerous literary works staged during the Rana Regime. At the age of fifty-one, while he was in his death-bed at the United Mission Hospital (then Shanta Bhawan), he humbly requested his fellow-companions to burn up all his literary treasures except "Muna-Madan." Thus it proves that the roles of Muna and Madan in the back-drop of the Himalayan region stands as the master-piece and by and large the best effort of this literary genius."Muna-Madan" the opera-type play written in the Gorkhali language and Devnagari scripts is also the first publication of its kind of the Poet Laureate Devkota because its charming verses can be put into classical tunes and rhymes in a melodious manner. During 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, the Nepali Congress contributed to create political awareness among the people, though it had several limitations. During 1970s and 1980s, the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist) was at the forefront of the movement that tried to rally people around the core agenda of societal transformation.
